Recent Construction News

Coomera Hospital

With building foundations being laid and 80% of the detailed design completed, Queensland’s $1.3 billion Coomera Hospital project is in full swing.

The project is a key component of the Queensland Government’s $14 billion Health Big Build, delivering new and expanded hospitals across Queensland. The 404-bed hospital, set to alleviate pressure on the Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital, will bring world-class health care closer to home for the northern Gold Coast community.

With construction forecasted to commence in 2025, the project is expected to reach completion by late-2027.
Tewantin TAFE Campus

The long-decommissioned Tewantin TAFE campus is set to receive a ‘fresh lease on life’, with plans to build a new Sunshine Coast School of Design.

Selected as the preferred proponent to lead the project, Architecture firm NRA Collaborative plans to focus on repurposing existing buildings to develop a vibrant educational hub, servicing between 500-800 students a year.

The new Sunshine Coast School of Design will offer courses in creative industries such as fashion, art, industrial design, architecture and interior design. For more information on the project, see here.

 Cairns’ Big Build

Construction has commenced for the $17.6 million upgrade and 2,600 m2 expansion of TAFE Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (College) in Cairns.

The jointly funded upgrade will play a crucial role in delivering training for Queensland’s growing maritime workforce. In a Queensland-first the College is partnering with Maritime Safety Queensland to offer a Certificate III in Maritime Operations.

Borumba Pumped Hydro Project

Three major works packages have been awarded to Queensland-based companies for a ‘nation-defining’ energy project.

Almost $190 million of contracts have been announced by Queensland Hydro for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project – a planned 2000 MW renewable energy initiative, west of the Sunshine Coast.

Appointed as the Dams Designer Delivery Partner for the proposed Borumba Project is Water2Wire Joint Venture (JV), who will be responsible for leading the engineering and design of the Project’s seven proposed dams.

The pumped hydro energy storage designer package was awarded to AFRY-Aurecon JV, who is set to advance the front-end engineering design documentation, focusing on the technical elements of the pumped hydro scheme itself.

Finally, a contract totalling $111 million was awarded to Decmil, an Australian-owned engineering and construction company, to design and construct two temporary workers’ camps. For more information on the temporary workers’ camps, see here.

LPC Lawyers’ ‘Hand Over Your Documents’ Series

1724632905435

LPC Lawyers has recently completed its three-part series investigating the process of ‘disclosure’ for parties involved in Queensland civil litigation. As previously noted in the September edition of Project & Construction Monthly, in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, we broadly explored the disclosure process, standard rules of disclosure and documents that will not fall within the ordinary duty to disclose by way of their ‘privileged’ nature. Read Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

Part 3 – Preliminary & Non-Party Disclosure

In the third instalment of the series, we examine the newly enacted ‘preliminary disclosure’ provision specified in the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules 1999 (Qld) (UCPR), as well as the requirement of ‘non-party disclosure’ under rule 242(1) of the UCPR. Read the full article here.

LPC Lawyers’ ‘Procurement and Tendering’ Series

Part 1 provides a brief overview of procurement and tendering, specifically defining what procurement entails, the types of tender processes, the usual steps involved in such processes, and tender documents as a whole. Read the full article here.

Part 2 – Queensland Government Processes

Part 2 explores the main considerations that all government agencies should have when procuring for building and construction maintenance (BCM). Read the full article here.

Part 3 – Risks

Part 3 highlights the main risks of tendering – both in the private and public sector – and provides strategies for how to manage them. Read the full article here.
